The only scheduled presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump happens Tuesday. Here's what you need to know.
The debate will air live on all the major networks and news channels. It takes place at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, and begins at 9 p.m. ET. ABC News's David Muir and Linsey Davis will serve as moderators. It will last 90 minutes with two commercial breaks.
The two campaigns have agreed to the rules, the most visible of which is that only the speaker's microphone will be live -- meaning the other candidate can't interrupt. Some other notable rules:
- The two moderators will be the only ones asking questions. The candidates will not be allowed to ask questions of each other.
- There are no opening statements. As a result of a coin flip, Trump will give the final closing statement.
- The candidates are not allowed to have props or pre-written notes. They will each be given a pen, a pad and a bottle of water.
- They will have two-minute answers to questions, two-minute rebuttals, and one extra minute for follow-ups, clarifications, or responses.
- There will be no audience in the room.
Although historians say that debates rarely have much impact on elections, political experts suggest this one could help sway undecided voters due to Harris's recent entry into the race and her relatively low profile under the Biden administration. In other words, for many of those undecideds, this will be their first real chance to decide whether they like what they see from her. (ABC News)
