BLACK PANTHER: THE ALBUM: Tops the Charts

TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • It's like Kanye said on Power: "I guess every superhero needs his theme music."
  • Whenever you want to take a quick trip to Wakanda, all you need are your headphones.
  • King Kendrick's got an ear for this kind of stuff -- he should executive produce more projects.
  • The only downside is that we'll have to wait years for Black Panther 2 and a new soundtrack.

As people nationwide pack theaters for Marvel’s Black Panther film, the accompanying soundtrack has topped Billboard. Black Panther: The Album debuts at number-one on the Billboard 200 album chart this week.

Curated by Kendrick Lamar and Top Dawg Entertainment CEO Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith, the compilation moved 154,000 equivalent album units, according to Nielsen Music. 93,000 of that came from streaming. Black Panther: The Album is TDE’s fifth number-one album, following Lamar’s Damn, untitled unmastered and To Pimp a Butterfly, plus ScHoolboy Q’s Oxymoron.

The 14-track LP features contributions from The Weeknd, James Blake, Future, SZA, Travis Scott, ScHoolboy Q, 2 Chainz, Khalid and more. The news comes days after the music video for “King’s Dead” dropped in support of the soundtrack. (Billboard)
