On this Monday, April 9th family, friends and teachers wake up to the reality that two of their students will no longer be coming to school. Community members in Liberty City say that they heard numerous shots on Sunday, and unfortunately some of those shots took the lives of two students. One of which being a 10TH grader who teachers say was an honor student, and Ricky Dixon a senior, both attended Miami North Western Senior High.
Family members say Ricky Dixon, a senior at Northwestern Senior High School, is 1 of the 4 people shot yesterday in the Liberty Square Housing Complex. They say he was there visiting friends when he was fired upon. He did not survive. Shooter(s) are still at large. @WPLGLocal10 pic.twitter.com/LlvZ4WGRKG— Liane Morejon (@LianeMorejonTV) April 9, 2018
Unacceptable! A national honor society student leader, described as bright, respectful, and witty, was lost to us. 17-year-old is one of two dead and four shot in Liberty City, cops say https://t.co/XLkNCAPfdW— Alberto M. Carvalho (@MiamiSup) April 9, 2018
Even Miami Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho expressed his discontent with the amount of youth lives being taken.
A shooter fires into a group, hits four, and takes the life of two, including a high school student. This is a mass shooting - but one that is not capturing national headlines. We must take a serious look at gun violence and access to guns in all zip codes. #LibertyCity— Alberto M. Carvalho (@MiamiSup) April 9, 2018
