This week Native Americans and Indigenous Aboriginals called a small victory as Los Angeles City Council pass a law making Columbus Day no more but now- 'Indigenous People Day!'
However, not everyone was excited about the change, according the LATimes;
"Italian Americans voiced anguish over the proposal, telling council members it would erase a portion of their heritage. Some said they supported the creation of Indigenous Peoples Day as long as it is held on a different date."
However many have argued that there was certainly a need to do away with "a state-sponsored celebration of genocide of indigenous peoples.” -Chrissie Castro, vice chairwoman of the Los Angeles City-County Native American Indian Commission.
