Doechii Drops Statement On Hip-Hop History Amid Criticism Of Her Music

Doechii released a long statement on social media Wednesday night, highlighting the significance of hip-hop and how the genre has changed over time. Her popularity has surged in 2024 after launching her mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal. Recently, some social media users have criticized her music for being too deep. She responded, stating, "Our music has always been deep. It’s complex and soulful. We use hip-hop to grow, protest, and celebrate. Art and music play a role in our pride as Black people. Our culture is woven into these genres. Don’t let anyone convince you that hip-hop isn't cool because it’s 'too deep.' It has always had depth for us and should remain that way. We created it! If we lose the soul, we lose the genre." She added, "Only we should define our art form. Anyone criticizing hip-hop because it makes you think or feel should be seen as an opponent. Consider what they gain from us simplifying our music and avoiding deeper topics. Only a small group benefits from us not being thoughtful. Stay strong." This statement follows her announcement of a major label debut album next year during an interview with Variety. She also recently gained attention for her performance on NPR's Tiny Desk.
