XXXTentacion (real name Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy) will be released from jail and serve house arrest, according to TMZ. The Florida rapper faces a total of 15 felony witness tampering charges that originally began with a 2016 domestic violence case involving an ex-girlfriend. He was expected to remain behind bars until his next trial date.
XXXTentacion was charged with seven felonies related to witness tampering and harassment Friday (Dec. 15). However, he was given eight new charges on Monday (Dec. 18).
The story behind the litany of charges against the 19-year-old is long, but you can read a thorough breakdown of it here. In October 2016, while XXXTentacion was in prison on charges of domestic violence against his ex, he reportedly committed tampering on phone calls from prison. These calls were recorded and reportedly will be presented as evidence against him in court.
XXXTentacion presently also faces charges of false imprisonment, aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, and domestic battery by strangulation.
At the beginning of the month, the rapper’s legal team submitted a document, signed by the woman he is accused of assaulting while she was pregnant, that purportedly stated she wanted the case to “go away.” Prosecutors, however, say XXXTentacion coerced her into signing it.
XXXTentacion is scheduled to appear in court on January 24, 2018. If he is convicted, he could face decades in prison.
