A new Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in the heart of the Florida Everglades—dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz” by critics—is drawing serious attention for its remote location and controversial purpose.
Situated far from public view, the detention center is reportedly housing undocumented immigrants in extreme isolation, raising concerns about access to legal aid, healthcare, and family communication. Advocates are calling it a deliberate move to keep detainees “out of sight, out of mind.”

lorida’s Attorney General James Uthmeier has been a vocal supporter of tougher immigration enforcement and is backing the facility as part of the state’s aggressive stance on undocumented immigration. However, immigrant rights groups argue the center is inhumane and intentionally designed to make due process more difficult.
The nickname “Alligator Alcatraz” reflects not just the swampy, dangerous terrain surrounding the facility, but also what many see as an alarming step in Florida’s expanding immigration crackdown.
