Doechii Opens Up About Struggles with Suicide in High School

Doechii has been an open book about her journey, and recently, she shared some of her most vulnerable moments from high school. The rapper admitted that during her teenage years, she struggled with suicidal thoughts, driven by bullying and isolation. Reflecting on that dark time, Doechii revealed that a pivotal moment came when she felt guided by a higher power. “God told me to write down the phrase ‘I am Doechii,’” she said, a declaration that helped her find strength and a sense of identity.

It was in that moment that she realized something profound: she would be the only one affected if she chose to take her life. The realization gave her the clarity to fight through the pain, and ultimately, it shaped her into the powerful voice we hear today.

Doechii is not the only artist from Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) to speak out about mental health. Many within the TDE family, including Kendrick Lamar and SZA, have also addressed struggles with mental health, using their platforms to destigmatize the conversation around mental well-being.

For anyone who might be struggling, Doechii’s story serves as a reminder that help is available. If you or someone you know is feeling hopeless, reach out. The Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 at 988, where you can either text or call. As Doechii poignantly put it, “No girl should miss prom”—a reminder that life’s beautiful moments are still ahead, even when things seem bleak.

Mental health matters, and sharing stories like Doechii’s can inspire others to seek the help they need.
