If South Florida rapper YNW Melly is convicted of killing two of his ex-friends a judge has made it easier for him to catch the death sentence by jurors.
Melly's trail is scheduled to begin later this month. Florida has new sentencing rules pushed by Fl. Governor Ron Disantis, following the Parkland High School shooter Nikolas Cruz only getting a life sentence due to a split 9-3 jury. The new situation is a death penalty recommendation with only an 8-4 vote; which is the lowest threshold in the United States.
In April of 2019, prosecutors announced they would be seeking the death penalty. Then in July 2022 the death penalty was dropped. Prosecutors shortly requested the death penalty proposed again.
Melly plead not guilty and has been denied bond. He has been in Broward County jail awaiting trial since 2019.
