Less Suicide During The Pandemic In South Florida

The pandemic has clearly stressed out countless Americans, but fewer people killed themselves in 2020 than in any time in recent years.

Despite the strains of sheltering at home, economic uncertainty and political turmoil, experts say the drop in suicides was not unexpected. Mental-health experts, however also caution that the risk of suicides remaining high for the coming months, as the pandemic grinds into an exhaustive second year.

Experts have warned of the dangers to people’s mental health, but across Florida, 2,975 people committed suicides in 2020, a drop of 13 percent from the previous year.

In Miami-Dade, 231 people killed themselves and in Broward 216 people committed suicide last year.
