Netflix is bringing Black love to Chocolate City this fall with its upcoming film, Really Love. Led by Melanin Productions and Homegrown Pictures, the film stars a number of critically acclaimed actors like Tristan "Mack" Wilds of The Wire, Kofi Siriboe of Queen Sugar, Uzo Aduba of Orange Is The New Black and Michael Ealy of 2 Fast 2 Furious. Not to mention, Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing is prepared to have her coming-out party.
"A Black painter and an ambitious law student try to make their romance last while not abandoning their own careers, or each other," the film's description reads.
"Black love, music, and culture collide in 'Chocolate City' as this fiery romantic drama takes shape. Really Love is the Black love story we’ve been waiting for."
Behind the scenes, Really Love is led by two promising filmmakers, Angel Kristi Williams and Felicia Pride, from Baltimore. Williams has made her name by working on several short films over the years, but she has broken through with Really Love and Netflix's upcoming series about the life of Colina Kaepernick, Colin in Black & White.
"Angel Kristi Williams is a writer/director born and raised in West Baltimore, Maryland. She was 8 years old when her late father gave her a VHS camcorder which sparked her love for the medium. After studying visual art, photography and experimental film, Angel developed a voice that embraces silence and the power of the image to tell a story," her portfolio website reads.
Pride has experience with Siriboe through her time as a writer on Queen Sugar. She's also served as an executive editor on Grey's Anatomy and published seven books.
"Felicia Pride is a TV writer/producer and an award-winning filmmaker. She wrote on Ava DuVernay's Queen Sugar and is currently a producer on Grey's Anatomy. She’s developing shows with FX and Netflix and has previously sold a show to BRAVO. In film, she’s sold two features, Deeper and Like It's The Last, both romantic dramas, to Universal Pictures," Pride's bio reads.
Together, Williams and Pride will put the DMV on the big screen with Really Love on August 25.
