Eric Church Honors John Prine With 'Long Monday' Cover

Eric Church is one of many artists mourning the loss of the legendary John Prine. Church, like many others, decided to remember Prine through music.

"We lost one of my all time favorites yesterday," Church said in a video shared on Instagram, adding, "a man that taught me how to write songs, so I want to do this for John." He continued on to perform a heartfelt cover of the classic, "Long Monday," off Prine's 2005 Fair & Square album.

"Gonna be a long Monday / Sittin' all alone on a mountain / By a river that has no end / Gonna be a long Monday / Stuck like the tick of a clock / That's come unwound again," he sings in the chorus.

Prine died on Tuesday (April 7) from complications of coronavirus (COVID-19) at age 73. The news came a week after Prine's wife, Fiona Prine, announced that he has been hospitalized since March 26 after the "sudden onset of COVID-19 symptoms."

Fiona released a statement on Wednesday (April 8) one day after Prine's death was announced.

"We have no words to describe the grief our family is experiencing at this time," she said. "John was the love of my life and adored by our sons Jody, Jack and Tommy, daughter in law Fanny, and by our grandchildren."

"Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the outpouring of love we have received from family, friends, and fans all over the world," she continued. "John will be so missed but he will continue to comfort us with his words and music and the gifts of kindness, humor and love he left for all of us to share."

The Prine family is asking that fans hoping to honor the music icon will consider making a donation to Thistle Farms, Room in the Inn or the Nashville Rescue Mission in lieu of flowers or gifts.
