Tiffany Haddish went through many hardships before she rose to fame. From being abused by her mother and ex-husband, to being molested as a kid in foster care, the actress/comedian has overcome a lot, E! News reports.
In her new memoir entitled The Last Black Unicorn, Haddish opens up about all of the obstacles she went through to be where she is today. When the star spoke about being molested, Haddish admitted that, at the time, she didn't know she was being abused in any way. She recalled the live-in father of one of her foster mothers offering to suck her breasts for 15 minutes everyday, as a way for them to grow faster. Haddish said this offer was made when he caught her stuffing tissue in her bra. She was 13 at the time. When she told this story to a friend when she was 19 years old, her friend was the one who told her that was molestation.
"In my mind, 'molested' meant somebody hurt you in some kind of way," Haddish wrote. "Like, they took something from you that you didn't want to give. And what the old man did never hurt. It didn't necessarily feel good, either, it was just whatever. And he never tried nothing else with me, not even once. It was just like—in my mind—he was helping me out."
When speaking about her abusive ex-husband -- who she married and divorced twice -- Haddish recalled him getting angry and jealous when he saw her speaking to fellow comedian Tom Green at a comedy show.
"He grabbed me by the collar, he was like, 'It's time to go to the room now,' in front of everybody," she wrote. "Just snatched me by my shirt, and pulled me to the elevator and threw me in it...once we got to our hotel room, he was so quick. He snatched me by the neck and slammed me into the wall."
At one point, things got so terrible that she went to the police station. It was closed when Haddish got there, but she called 911 and said, "Ya'll need to lock me up, because I'm about to kill my husband." When cops arrived, they saw the cuts and bruises on her body and sent her to the ER. Her ex was arrested. The next day, Haddish suffered a miscarriage. She didn't even know she was pregnant at the time.
